Common symptoms in older fuse boxes – and what they mean

The consumer unit is the hub of your installation, and it ages quietly. Many houses in Stockholm still have fuse boxes with screw-in fuses, sized for a completely different era of electricity use – long before induction hobs, heat pumps and electric cars.

The symptoms are easy to recognise once you know what to look for. Fuses that blow frequently mean the circuits are working close to their limit. Heat or discolouration around the fuse holders points to loose connections – a fault to take seriously, since that heat can eventually cause a fire. A buzzing sound, a burnt smell, or a unit where nobody remembers which fuse belongs to what are all clear signs that it needs to be inspected or replaced.

• Screw-in fuses instead of circuit breakers – they work, but the protection is blunter and gives no fault indication
• No RCD – common in older installations, while today's rules require residual-current protection for new and altered work
• Unlabelled or mislabelled circuits – making every future fault harder to isolate
• Full or heavily loaded circuits – if you are planning an EV charger, a sauna or a renovation, the unit often needs more circuits and the right protection
• Heat, discolouration or a burnt smell at the unit – switch off the main breaker if it is safe to do so, and call immediately

How a consumer unit replacement works

Replacing a consumer unit is essentially a planned job with clear steps – though the need is sometimes discovered acutely, when an old unit starts to smell or fails outright. This is how we work.

• Assessment on site. We go through the existing unit, the number of circuits, the load and your plans ahead – an EV charger, an extension or a renovation all affect the sizing.
• Proposal and planning. You get a clear description of what needs doing and why, and we book a time that suits you.
• The replacement itself. The power is switched off, the old unit is removed and a modern DIN-rail unit with miniature circuit breakers and RCD protection is installed. Existing circuits are transferred and checked one at a time.
• Testing before re-energising. Connections are checked, the RCD's function is tested and the installation is measured before the power goes back on.
• Labelling and handover. Every circuit is clearly labelled, and you are shown where the main switch is, how to test the RCD and what protects what in your home.

What you may do yourself at the consumer unit – and what you may not

Some things at the consumer unit are everyday actions you both may and should do yourself. Reset a breaker that has tripped. Replace a blown screw-in fuse with a new one of the same rating – never a larger one. Press the RCD's test button at regular intervals: it should trip instantly, and if it does not, the installation should be checked. You can also make all future fault-finding easier by labelling the circuits – switch off one fuse at a time and note what loses power.

Everything behind the cover, on the other hand, is the electrician's territory. Loosening conductors, replacing components or changing connections inside the unit is work on the fixed installation, and under current Swedish regulations it may only be carried out by an electrical installation company registered with Elsäkerhetsverket. If you notice a burnt smell from the unit: switch off the main breaker if it is safe to do so, and call us. Where there is smoke or open flame – always call 112 first.

Planned replacements are booked at a time that suits you instead.
